Procedures Offered

Comprehensive Oral Examination

Your dentist examines your throat, neck, and mouth each visit, searching for potential signs of oral cancer and other abnormalities. The earlier these problems receive treatment, the better your prognosis. The dentist checks your restorations and looks for trouble signs. For children, the dentist tracks their oral development. You will receive periodic X-rays to look for new issues. Learn more about dental exams

Dental Cleaning

Professional cleanings remove tartar and plaque from the tooth surfaces. They help to reduce the chance of developing tooth decay, where the plaque lingers. During a cleaning, the hygienist also provides vital home care instructions to help you keep your smile as bright as possible between visits. Learn more about dental cleanings

Dental Sealants

Sealants are a safe plastic resin the hygienist applies to children's and teens' molars with a brush. Sealants fill the deep crevices on the chewing surfaces of the molars, preventing plaque and food particles from becoming trapped and causing tooth decay.

Fluoride Treatment

Professional fluoride treatment is significantly more effective than over-the-counter treatments. Typically, hygienists apply fluoride as a varnish. Fluoride treatments are common for children and teens, but many adults also choose to receive them.

Custom Mouth Guards

Teeth are vulnerable to falls, collisions, and being struck with sporting equipment. Mouth guards protect children and adults who play sports from many cases of dental trauma. A mouth guard from your dentist works much better than an over-the-counter version. Learn more about custom oral appliances

Custom Night Guards

Night guards protect teeth from chips, cracks, and uneven wear caused by bruxism or chronic teeth grinding. They can relieve jaw pain as well. Learn more about custom oral appliances

Deep Periodontal Cleanings

If you have gum disease, we can provide a deep periodontal cleaning. This procedure is also known as scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing removes tartar and plaque above and below the gum line, allowing healthy gum tissue to attach to the root and controlling periodontal disease.  Learn more about scaling and root planing

Frequently Asked Questions About Preventive Dentistry

How should I care for my teeth at home?
Dentists recommend brushing twice each day for a full two minutes each time. Floss once daily. Optionally, you can use a fluoride mouth rinse.
Why do I need a cleaning every six months if I have healthy teeth?
Even if your teeth are healthy, you could have hidden problems only visible on an X-ray. Your previous restorations may need work, or you may have a new cavity. Be sure to see your family dentist twice yearly for a cleaning and comprehensive exam.
At what age should children receive sealants?
The hygienist will apply sealants when your child has permanent molars, around 7 or 8. Sealants need reapplication annually. They can significantly reduce the risk of cavities in the permanent molars.
Are fluoride treatments safe?
Fluoride treatments are safe when given in the dentist's office. The fluoride varnish your hygienist applies is significantly stronger than products available over the counter. Still, since the varnish hardens when it touches saliva, there is very little chance of ingesting fluoride. Fluoride treatments are known to be safe for children and adults.
What are the signs that I may have gum disease?

Early gum disease or gingivitis is reversible with professional cleaning and proper home care. Here are the signs:

  • Swollen, bleeding gums
  • Reddened gums
  • Sore gums

Advancing gum disease may show the following signs:

  • Extreme sensitivity to heat and cold
  • Bad breath
  • More space between teeth
  • Pimples or abscesses on the gums
  • Pus along the gums
  • Loose teeth

If you notice any of these signs, call us as soon as possible for an appointment. We can help you take control of your oral health and hold off future problems.
